Like many Jews and Christians, David Plotz long assumed he knew what was in the Bible. He read parts of it as a child in Hebrew school, then at-tended a Christian high school where he studied the Old and New Testaments. Many of the highlights stuck with himâ€"Adam and Eve, Cain versus Abel, Jacob versus Esau, Jonah versus whale, forty days and nights, ten plagues and commandments, twelve tribes and apostles, Red Sea walked under, Galilee walked on, bush into fire, rock into water, water into wine. And, of course, he absorbed from all around him other bits of the Bibleâ€"from stories he heard in churches and synagogues, in movies and on television, from his parents and teachers. But it wasn't until he picked up a Bible at a cousin's bat mitzvahâ€"and became engrossed and horrified by a lesser-known story in Genesisâ€"that he couldn't put it down.

At a time when wars are fought over scriptural interpretation, when the influence of religion on American politics has never been greater, when many Americans still believe in the Bible's literal truth, it has never been more important to get to know the Bible. Good Book is what happens when a regular guyâ€"an average Jobâ€"actually reads the book on which his religion, his culture, and his world are based. Along the way, he grapples with the most profound theological questions: How many commandments do we actually need? Does God prefer obedience or good deeds? And the most unexpected ones: Why are so many women in the Bible prostitutes? Why does God love bald men so much? Is Samson really that stupid?

Good Book is an irreverent, enthralling journey through the world's most important work of literature.

THE CHILDRENS BOOK OF CHRISTMAS STORIES

THE CHILDREN’S BOOK OF CHRISTMAS STORIES I. CHRISTMAS AT FEZZIWIG’S WAREHOUSE CHARLES DICKENS “Yo Ho! my boys,” said Fezziwig. “No more work to-night! Christmas Eve, Dick! Christmas, Ebenezer! Let’s have the shutters up!” cried old Fezziwig with a sharp clap of his hands, “before a man can say Jack Robinson. . . .” “Hilli-ho!” cried old Fezziwig, skipping down from the high desk with wonderful agility. “Clear away, my lads, and let’s have lots of room here! Hi lli-ho, Dick! Cheer-up, Ebenezer!” Clear away! There was nothing they wouldn’t have cleared away, or couldn’t have cleared away with old Fezziwig looking on. It was done in a minute. Every movable was packed off, as if it were dismissed from public life forevermore; the floor was swept and watered, the lamps were trimmed, fuel was heaped upon the fire; and the warehouse was as snug, and warm, and dry, and bright a ballroom as you would desire to see on a winter’s night.

Museum Guard

This is an amazing and beautifully written novel about two museum guards, one an eccentric uncle, the other his orphaned nephew, DeFoe. By day they spend their time curating an art collection, breaking the silence of the museum with heated conversation; by night we learn about their loves and past histories. DeFoe is in love with Imogen, the young caretaker of the sole small Jewish cemetery in Halifax Nova Scotia, where the novel begins in 1938. She becomes obssessed with a Dutch painting called Jewess on a Street in Amsterdam and abandons her life to look for nobility in the intensity of life in Amsterdam for Jews in the late 30s. The book is an examination of the desire to step out of the everyday and into action, with a startling conclusion. With echoes of the holocaust and of a world lost but not forgotten, this is a poignant and perfect novel of great power. On September 5, 1938, DeFoe Russet helps hang a new show at a tiny Nova Scotia museum. He doesn't even pay much attention to the eight new paintings from Holland; he'll have time enough to take them in later on. After all, the buttoned-down 25-year-old is one of two people at Halifax's Glace Museum paid to watch out for the art, to stop people from getting too close to it. But DeFoe also knows that "as a guard you had emotions. You got to know paintings better than you got to know the people in your life. Speaking for myself."

The other guard--and the man who raised him after his parents died in a zeppelin crash when he was 9--is his Uncle Edward. Edward is certainly not the steadiest fellow employee or familial influence. He devotes his nights to drinking, poker, and charming women at the Lord Nelson, the hotel where both men live, and his days to hangovers, somnolence, and generally harassing museumgoers. DeFoe, at least, is a model employe e. Yet his personal life cannot be quite so regulated, and for the last two years he has been frustrated in his relationship with a caretaker at the local Jewish cemetery. He seems to expend most of his energy anticipating Imogen Linny's moods, assessing the power of her headaches, and banging his head against her nocturnal mixed messages and philosophizing. As the novel progresses, Imogen also grows increasingly obsessed with one of the newly arrived paintings, Jewess on a Street in Amsterdam.

Soon, DeFoe puts his career in jeopar dy for Imogen, stealing the picture for her--though this is only one of the mysteries at the heart of Howard Norman's strange and startling third novel, The Museum Guard. Through DeFoe's eyes, we, too, begin to understand the allure of the painting, in which a woman pushes a bicycle and holds a loaf of bread, the shop window behind her filled with toothbrushes. "The toothbrushes made me laugh. They quickly put me in a good mood," he recounts. "But then I looked close up at the Jewess's face; I was sunk from that mood in a second. Because it struck me as a face of desperate sadness. Those are my own words. I stood as close to the painting as I could without touching it. Me--a guard. I reached out then and touched the woman's face. And I did not flinch back my hand or warn myself."

Howard Norman's protagonist would probably be able to pull himself back; this is a man who calms himself down by ironing endless white shirts. And he fully intends to keep the same job for the next 30 years. But those around him lack his instinct for order and seem to be pushing him toward the grand, self-des tructive gesture. News of Hitler's advances on Europe also make him realize "how small Halifax had become." Imogen, too, feels her life a confinement, but her reaction is more extreme. She literally wills herself to become the woman in the painting. In one bizarre scene--and Norman has a knack for turning the extreme into the everyday--DeFoe finds her filling in for the usual museum guide. Speaking in an unconvincing Dutch accent and dressed as the Jewess, Imogen tells a group of increasingly puzzled women her version of events. "While he painted me, we fell in love. Just weeks before, with my parents' death, I had become estranged from my very soul. My marriage to Joop Heijman helped me to reconcile. And now you know my deepest secrets." Edward's assessment is as wry as ever, and spot-on: "Life in Halifax used to be so simple, didn't it, DeFoe?"

As Imogen's identification grows, she is resolved to go to Amsterdam and "reunite" with the painter. Howard Norman writes with such persuasive oddity that it's no surprise when those closely allied to the Glace Museum find themselves moving this futile, intrusive, and dangerous plan along. The Museum Guard is an unsettling examination of a group of people (with very odd names) who let themselves get too close to art--and perhaps to life. --Kerry Fried

Question by siwiqi:

What is the alternate to power supply for living?

As electricity is shut down for minimum of 6 hours, frequently for 12 to 18 hours and sometimes for a whole day, what alternate we may have for living?

Best answer:

Answer by dmb06851
I presume the word you were looking for was alternative (look it up in an English dictionary).

Our forefathers managed without an electrical supply. If things get bad enough then I am sure we could manage too.

Author Eric Lee has pioneered the use of the Internet by unions around the globe, and the website he established in 1998, LabourStart, now appears in 19 languages and is used by thousands of activists every day. In early 2004, the author launched the first online labor radio station and this book reveals exactly what was involved in setting it up. Animals
by MuJa K

Question by Dude:

How many animals did Noah bring with him on the ark?

Is it correct that he brought 7 pairs of clean animals and 1 pair of unclean animals? If not, how many of each animal did he bring aboard? What is the difference between a clean animal and an unclean animal?

Best answer:

Answer by LouisWu
Regarding the Noah myth:
1) During the time it was supposed to have happened, civilizations were flourishing in India, China, and Egypt. These civilizations were not affected by the flood and did not record such an event.
2) Collecting ALL the animals would have been an impossible task. At the time of Noah, the society of which he was a part, did not know of North America, South America, Australia, or anything of Europe north of Rome. To think that anyone from Noah's f amily traveled to North America to get skunks and bison, or to South America to get llamas and alpacas, or to Australia to get kangaroos or koalas is so utterly ludicrous that it is beyond ridicule.

Vita: An Erotic Thriller

"VITA'S AN OVER-SEXED LISBETH SALANDER!"
--Reader Lovie Bartel
Bala Cynwd, PA

During a party at a hilltop penthouse above Athens, the president of Credit Suisse suffers a bloody, fatal hemorrhage. Murder is not suspected. Nor do bodyguards take note of a handsome young man who--in reality--is the ingeniously disguised wife of the American ambassador. Only the diplomat himself is aware that his beautiful, second young wife is hell-bent on bringing him to ruin...with her "artistic" and undetectable murders of his closest friends.

Vita leads the ambassador's operatives on a chase through the souks of Cairo, Red Sea diving resorts, and riot-torn streets in Los Angeles. In this tale of misplaced love, a husband, a mother, and two lovers mesmerized by beauty and talent and liberated sexual aggressiveness endure more suffering than puny death can inflict.

FROM CHAPTER 2:

"He had been warned that she was an unknown, and for an ambassado r-designate a choice full of risk. He wanted to prove that he'd made a glittering, correct choice. He'd found a new young wife of beauty, talent and elegance, whose name itself referred to hymns of praise: Hindu Vitas contain the supreme sacred knowledge of which aristocratic Brahmins are the sole guardian and interpreter. Vita was perfect, were it not for the one truth her husband had refused to see--she was a freak! Her grace, her bearing, her authority were the result of simply being a superb actress."

WHAT EARLY READERS ARE SAYING:

"Dr. Hannibal Lecter would be proud to call Vita a daughter of his own."
--E. Brown
Long Island, NY

"This novel is crotch-candy! Agatha Christie murder puzzles & exotic locations, plus dollops of hot sex."

--M. Vinicor

"...BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY' for the jaded, the decadent."
--L. Brady,

"...I was nauseated by this parade of mental and physical perversion. How could anyone consider this disgusting piece of filth to be entertainment? It shows the author's contempt for ordinary decent people."
