Atlases, maps, drawn
Atlases

Question by carefreegal:

How are maps and atlases drawn?

Best answer:

Answer by Michel Verheughe
By projecting the latitude and longitude of known places on a paper. The most usual forms of projections are:

Mercator. A cylindrical projection that makes it impossible to show the poles because the distortion is too great. But it shows latitudes and longitudes at right angles, something that makes it convenient for seafarers doing astro- navigation.

Lambert. A conical projection. It is much used for aeronautical and meteorological purpose. It is closer to the globe but only for a portion of it. It can't be used for worldwide maps. It is the closest to gnomonic projection; the one where the great circle is represented as a straight line. It makes sense e.g. for airmen who use mostly radio navigation. Radio waves follow the shortest way, which is the great circle; the line that divides the globe in two.
